Discovering Saudi Arabia: Tips for every time frame

EXO's guidance for planning a holiday to Saudi Arabia

Travelling to Saudi Arabia is an experience that promises both enlightenment and adventure, exploring a diverse land where ancient history and modern civilization blend seamlessly against a backdrop of breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality.

With even three days in the country, travellers can get a taste of Saudi Arabia’s fascinating culture and history. But those who can stay longer will be rewarded with opportunities to dive into the culture and soak up the natural beauty, which ranges from deserts to mountains to tropical islands.

EXO suggests spending at least eight days in the country.  However, whether it’s a few days, a week, or longer, EXO can arrange a journey that will ensure travellers get the most out of their time in this diverse and captivating country.

We have a wide range of half-day and full day experiences that scratch beneath the surface and unveil the true Saudi Arabia, from food-focused walking tours to hot air balloon flights, canyon hikes to boat cruises.

Ready to start planning? Read on to learn what to do in Saudi Arabia in 3 days, 5 days, 8 days and more.  And be sure to read to the end for special tips on getting to and around Saudi Arabia.

Three days in Saudi: Dive deep into a single region

For a short stay in Saudi Arabia, EXO recommends focusing on one destination to explore major landmarks and get a taste of the local culture.

AlUla is the highlight of any Saudi Arabia journey so, if short on time, travellers should head straight to this remarkable region. Situated deep in the desert, the draw to AlUla is its natural rock formations, extensive pre-Arabic rock art and immaculately preserved ancient tombs. Visits to the historic sites can be combined with experiences that fit personal interests, such as desert 4×4 safaris, canyon hikes, hot air balloon flights and more as well as an impressive array of dining and accommodation options.

Alternatively,  travellers with only three days can choose between bustling Riyadh or the vibrant coastal life of Jeddah. Each of these cities has a unique appeal, with Riyadh showcasing Saudi Arabia’s modern culture and commercial buzz while Jeddah offers a more laid-back look at liberal local lifestyles and the opportunity for snorkelling in the Red Sea.

5-7 days in Saudi Arabia: Experience the contrast

With a few extra days, travellers can explore the contrasts of Saudi Arabia by combining two or three stops.

Starting in the urban landscape of Riyadh or Jeddah, guests can soak in the modern vibes and cultural sites before transitioning to the natural and historical wonders outside the cities.  This could mean pairing Riyadh’s architectural marvels with road trip along an old trading route  or from the bustling markets of  Jeddah to the ancient wonders of AlUla

For those who like to get off the beaten track, a journey from Jeddah through the southwestern mountains offers stark contrast to the inland desert landscapes.

Or for luxury travellers, the Red Sea’s resorts provide the perfect setting for unwinding after exploring the cultural highlights of Saudi Arabia.

Eight days or more in Saudi : A taste of everything

Staying more than a week in Saudi Arabia opens up a world of travel possibilities. EXO recommends structuring the journey to include a mix of modern cities, ancient archaeological sites and natural landscapes.

A classic eight-day journey would start in one of the major cities, such as Jeddah, then move on to explore sacred Medina, the historical depth of places like AlUla and natural wonders in between before wrapping up in Riyadh. Along the way, guests can enjoy diverse experiences from urban exploration to a desert oasis picnic, soft adventures such as trekking or adrenaline-pumping 4×4 safaris- all without feeling rushed.

Saudi’s northeastern corner provides an intrepid alternative for an eight-day journey, with ancient cities, forts and castles as well as some of the country’s most unique landscapes. Or a short cultural visit of, for example, Riyadh and AlUla can be paired with a few nights at one of the Red Sea’s luxury resorts.

Extended stay in Saudi Arabia: Delve deeper

With more time to spare, the true depth of Saudi Arabia’s offerings unfolds.

In addition to classic destinations like Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla, guests with more time can add on Medina and Mecca for more cultural discovery.

Or venture into remote areas, like the northeast or southwest, on overland adventures that unveil dramatic landscapes.  Journeys such as our earlier-mentioned Mountains of Arabia or Northeastern Explorer in Tabuk are the perfect complement to a cultural programme.

Alternatively, a slower-paced Saudi Arabia holiday, with less stops but more time in each place, allows travellers the chance to truly soak up the rhythms of modern life and traditional culture.

Extended stays in Jeddah, AlUla or the Red Sea area are also recommended for those who want to enjoy the vibrant arts and culinary scene that is rapidly evolving.

Getting to and around Saudi Arabia:

There are 30+ direct flight routes from Europe and America to Saudi Arabia.  The busiest international airport is  King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, while Jeddah and Medina also are served by long-haul flights. Another option for international travellers, is to connect through a regional hub such as Dubai or Abu Dhabi, into Saudi Arabia tourism hotspots like AlUla, Tabuk, Abha and the Red Sea.

Despite its size, getting around Saudi Arabia is easy thanks to a great road infrastructure, reliable domestic flights and a growing high-speed rail network. While flights are often the most convenient, EXO highly recommends overland travel during some parts of the journey to afford travellers a glimpse of the diverse landscapes found within Saudi Arabia’s borders. Self-drive tours are a wonderful option, as well.
