Korea experiences four distinct seasons, each bringing its own charm to the landscape and offering opportunities for exploration throughout the year.
The country’s relatively small size ensures that these seasonal changes are uniform across most regions, with slight differences between the mountainous interior and the coastal areas.
This predictability makes it easy to plan a Korea holiday around preferred weather conditions and activities.
In spring, visitors are treated to vibrant cherry blossoms and mild temperatures making it a popular time for outdoor activities such as hiking and visiting historic temples. Summer offers opportunities to enjoy the warm weather on Korea’s coastal beaches or to escape the heat by exploring the mountainous national parks.
As autumn arrives, the landscapes transform into a canvas of golds and reds, creating an ideal backdrop for urban and countryside exploration, while Korea’s winter brings snow and colder temperatures, the perfect setting for hot springs or skiing at renowned resorts.
No matter the season, Korea’s year-round tourism opportunities cater to a wide range of interests, from cultural immersion and nature exploration to adventure pursuits. Read on to learn more!
March to May: Spring blossoms
Spring in Korea is marked by a significant warming trend. The season starts with crisp mornings and evenings, gradually transforming into pleasantly warm days.
Average temperatures range from 10°C to 18°C (50-65°F), but it’s wise to pack layers for cooler mornings and evenings. Occasional showers bring the landscapes to life, however the rains are rarely long nor heavy enough to disrupt a day of sightseeing.
Starting in late March, the country’s beloved cherry blossoms begin to appear, transforming the landscapes into various shades of pink. It is also a time of festivals, providing guests with the opportunity to see and experience more aspects of Korean culture.
EXO’s Recommendations: April is one of the busiest months in Korea, as tourists flock to the country to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom so booking early is required! During spring we recommend trekking at Seoraksan National Park and Jeju Island, where pleasant temperatures and lush landscapes create perfect conditions for hikes.
June to August: Summer sun and heat
Summer is the warmest season in Korea, with daily temperatures averaging 27-30°C and evenings hovering around 20-25°C. Although the cities and inland regions are humid in summer, the mountain air and coastal regions remain pleasant.
Each month brings its own nuances. June tends to be less busy, as the spring tourism rush ends and the rains begin. July can be very wet and humid so while there are few crowds, it is wise to prepare for lots of rain. By August, the sun is shining again and, with kids on school holidays, domestic tourism soars before tapering off as September approaches.
Thanks to the rain, summer is also the time when Korea’s landscapes are at their most vibrant and the sunny days of the season are ideal for trekking and rural excursions, especially in August.
EXO’s recommendations: Busan’s Haeundae Beach is the most popular coastal destination in the summer months. Jeju Island, renowned for its natural beauty, is another highlight in the summer with white sand beaches complimenting the verdant green inland landscapes. Trekking Jeju’s volcanic landscapes, tea fields and hidden waterfalls are a great way to enjoy the Korean summer.
September- November: Fall colours & cool weather
September begins to cool off, a trend that continues throughout the fall months. During the first half of the season, temperatures hover between 16-26 C (60-78F) and skies are clear. Humidity can still be high during September, but rarely uncomfortable.
By mid-October, the humidity has all but disappeared and temperatures continue to slowly cool off. By November, especially the second half of the month, the weather starts giving hints of winter with temperature dipping to 2-12 C (35-53F)
It’s important to note that, in the fall, temperatures can vary from place to place in Korea, with elevated regions and coastal cities cooler than urban centres and low-lying plains. And there are also significant drops, at times, between day time temperatures and evening. Therefore, for fall Korea travel, EXO suggests packing layers to ensure comfort throughout the trip!
EXO’s Recommendations: Thanks to the mild temperatures and clear skies, fall is a great time in all corners of Korea. It’s especially a great season for outdoor adventures in one of the country’s 22 national parks. For autumn colours, we recommend visiting Nami Island, a river island near Chuncheon, and Hwadam Botanical Gardens in Gwanju.
December to mid-March: Winter wonderland
Winter in Korea typically lasts from December to March. During this period the air is crisp, with temperatures hovering around freezing in the daytime and dipping lower at night. Snowfall is almost daily in the mountainous regions while the lowlands get occasional snow, covering the cities and sites in a beautiful white blanket.
The colder months in Korea reveal a picturesque landscape, with serene, snow-draped mountains and white-washed urban settings. The substantial snowfall in the higher elevations means incredible opportunities for skiing and snowboarding while less-active travellers will enjoy soaking in Korea’s renowned hot springs.
It’s worth noting that winter rewards with few crowds and low-season pricing. Visitors can explore historical sites and urban wonders at a more relaxed pace.
EXO Recommends During winter, we recommend starting the day with museum visits and indoor activities, saving outdoor sightseeing for the warmer afternoons. For adventure seekers, we recommend skiing at one of the many easily-accessible resorts and ice skating at outdoor ice rinks inSeoul and Busan.
