Thailand’s weather features three seasons, each offering its own distinct appeal.
The dry season (November – February) is perfect for visitors, with pleasant temperatures, low humidity and clear skies.
The hot season (March-May) brings higher temperatures but with it the annual ‘Water Festival’- a lively way to cool off and experience local culture- and a range of sunny beach options.
Thailand’s most vibrant time of year is the green season (June – October) , with moderate temperatures accompanied by short, heavy rains.
It’s important to note the southern Thai beaches benefit from a unique weather pattern, governed by two different climate systems bringing tropical rains at different times of the year. This unique climate ensures there’s always a perfect time to explore Thailand’s shores.
To best explain the nuances in weather and seasonality in Thailand, EXO divides the country into four main geographical areas, each experiencing slightly different climatic patterns:
- North and northeast Thailand: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai and Isaan Province
- Central Thailand: Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi and Sukhothai
- Southern Thailand- Andaman Coast beaches: Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Islands
- Southern Thailand- Gulf Coast beaches: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Surat Thani
- Southern Thailand- Khao Sok National Park: due to the unique weather patterns in the park, we have separated it in order to provide specific details
Read on to learn more about the variations in Thailand’s seasons and EXO’s recommendations for where to go at each time of year.
November to February: Cool season
This is the most popular time to visit Thailand, as the temperatures are pleasant and humidity is low. Crowds and costs rise at this time of year, especially over the new year period.
- Northern Thailand: With temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), and clear skies it is the perfect season for exploring the mountainous regions, trekking through lush jungles and visiting cultural sites.
- Central Thailand: The season offers pleasant weather with temperatures averaging between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F) but heating up to the mid-30s by late February.
- Southern Thailand- Andaman Coast, Gulf Coast and Khao Sok: November to February is the rare period where both coasts experience dry, sunny days with warm temperatures (24-32°C) and calm seas.
EXO’s recommendations: We suggest booking in advance to secure preferred hotels and services during this season and considering lesser known destinations to avoid the crowds, such as Isaan province in the northeast and Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south- both are rich in culture, history and natural beauty.
March to May: Hot, summer season
March to May is the dry season, with little to no rainfall and often intense sun. Temperatures climb steadily, reaching their peak in April and May, with humidity also increasing, making it feel hotter.
- Northern & Central Thailand: Temperatures soar above 35°C in the daytime but evenings and early mornings are often cooler, especially in the northern mountains.
- Southern Thailand- Andaman Coast: The season starts with high heat and humidity in March and April, giving way to occasional showers in May.
- Southern Thailand- Gulf Coast: March to May are dry and sunny on the Gulf Coast, with temperatures a consistent 30-35°C in the daytime and cooler at night.
- Southern Thailand- Khao Sok: Khao Sok remains dry and sunny through the end of April with mild temperatures. By May, rains begin and crowds thin out.
EXO’s recommendations: During the hot season, we suggest adjusting itineraries to start sightseeing early in the morning when the sun is less intense and planning indoor activities during the peak midday heat. It’s the perfect time of year to wrap up a Thailand holiday with an adventure in Khao Sok or a Koh Samui beach break.
June to October: Green season
This is Thailand’s rainy season, but- contrary to popular belief- it’s not constant rain. Hot and humid days are interrupted by afternoon showers or thunderstorms, a refreshing break that results in lush, green landscapes. While some areas experience heavier rainfall, others might only have short showers.
- Northern Thailand: The green season in Northern Thailand brings short, heavy downpours, usually in the late afternoon or evening, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 32°C.
- Central Thailand: Bangkok and the surrounding areas experience frequent but short-lived rain showers during the rainy season. Day time temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C.
- Southern Thailand- Andaman Coast: The Andaman Coast receives a high amount of rain from June to September, tapering off by October. For sun-seekers, it’s best to head to the Gulf Coast during these months.
- Southern Thailand- Gulf Coast: June to August are usually sunny and dry on the Gulf Coasts with tropical showers arriving in September and carrying through October.
- Southern Thailand- Khao Sok: Khao Sok experiences a distinct weather pattern during this season, with wet conditions in June, September and October, punctuated by dry, clear weather in July and August.
EXO’s recommendations: The green season is a wonderful time to explore Thailand’s central and northern regions, with less crowds and lush landscapes. Pair it with a beach stay for a perfect Thailand holiday.
