There’s a Whole New World Outside of Vientiane Characterized by Wild Animals, Wildlife and Orchids

Just outside of Laos' capital city lies a world of natural beauty, stunning vistas, and magnificent wildlife. That’s not to say there isn’t much to see in the capital.

Just outside of Laos’ capital city lies a world of natural beauty, stunning vistas, and magnificent wildlife. That’s not to say there isn’t much to see in the capital. Quite the opposite! But why not take a few steps out of it and see what lies ahead? If you’re looking for some diverse cultures not seen in the city (or town, Vientiane feels more like a town doesn’t it?) and an interesting and diverse ecosystem, then read on.

You’ll start off in the capital. And tour the beautiful city/town in the quickest eco-friendly way possible via electric bike. Visit tranquil temples, fascinating markets, and colonial buildings before feasting on a delicious lunch at Mak Phet, a charity-run restaurant. As the day comes to a close, watch the sun set over the Mekong River before enjoy a traditional Lao dance performance at dinner.

We hope you have your trekking boots on because you’re off for a light adventure just outside the capital. Travel to Phou Khao Kway National Park where you will trek through lush jungles past waterfalls and rising peaks that house a diverse population of animals and wildlife. In addition, you’ll get to see some beautiful sets of orchids. They are truly stunning and are native to only this part of the world.

With each step you take, you’re actually helping out Laos’ wildlife. Yes, the trek is part of a charity project whose aim is to protect Lao wildlife from poachers. How? By training the locals about the wildlife and about forestry protection. This is such a beautiful area. Let’s preserve it!

After an exhilarating trek in the national park, head over to Ban Pako Ecolodge, your home for the night. The place is surrounded by the very nature you just discovered, with green trees and the refreshing ambiance of the Nam Ngum River.

And if the surrounding nature isn’t refreshing enough for you, try out the herbal sauna as well as a traditional Lao massage. Great remedies after that trek. Or if you want, grab a tire and just float lazily along the river.

So there you have it, a nice soft adventure just outside of Vientiane. All in all, it is just another smooth and laid back Lao experience. If you need more of the relaxing aura the country is renowned for, then check out our Laos tour page. Just about everyone agrees, this is the most chilled out country out there.
