New Entry Formalities in Laos: Digital Immigration Registration

New Entry Formalities in Laos: Digital Immigration Registration

From 1 September 2025, travellers using selected Laos checkpoints must complete a Digital Immigration registration and present a QR code on arrival and departure. The pilot aims to speed up processing and reduce paperwork at the border.

Here is what you and your clients need to know:

During the pilot, the digital process applies only at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport and the First Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge (Vientiane–Nong Khai). Travellers must complete an online form within 3 days before travel for both arrival and departure, then show the generated QR code to immigration. Paper arrival and departure cards are not required at these pilot checkpoints.

The authorities expect to roll the system out nationwide by 1 January 2026. For privacy and accuracy, EXO cannot submit the forms on a traveller’s behalf, although our teams will guide clients step by step. Thai Border Pass holders are currently exempt during the trial.

How it works:

  • Who needs to register: Any traveller using one of the four pilot checkpoints listed above.

  • When to register: Within 3 days before each leg of travel. Complete one form before arrival and another before departure.

  • Where to register:

  • What to show at the border: A clear QR code on phone or printout. Ensure passport and ticket details match the submission.

  • VIP fast-track: Clients must submit their own details. Our teams can advise but will not enter data on behalf of travellers.

  • Scope of the pilot: Required only at the four checkpoints during the trial. Other border posts are expected to adopt the system ahead of 1 January 2026.

  • Useful background: See the Laotian Times update for an overview of timing and scope.

For any bookings from 1 September, please add the registration links to client documents and pre-departure notes. Our Laos team will share updates as the authorities confirm further details.
