As Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, Tonle Sap is the lifeblood of Cambodia, sustaining both natural and human communities. The lake undergoes dramatic transformations throughout the year, swelling during the rainy season and shrinking to one-fifth of its size during the dry months.
The lake’s 1.5 million residents live in floating villages where houses, schools and markets rise and fall with the lake’s seasonal flow. These communities have adapted to life on the water, relying on fishing as a primary source of income while also building houses on stilts or floats to navigate the changing water levels.
Beyond these communities, the lake is teeming with biodiversity. Its thriving ecosystem supports a diversity of bird species, aquatic animals, reptiles and mammals.
A trip to the lake offers a window into daily life on the water and a chance to explore its biodiversity. Read on to learn more about EXO’s Tonle Sap experiences and how to plan a visit.
Planning a visit:
There are four main areas accessible from Siem Reap:
- Chong Kneas: Located just a 30-40 minute drive from Siem Reap, this lake village is the most accessible and also the most tourist-oriented, with souvenir vendors and shops among the local homes.
- Kampong Phluk: About a 50-minute drive from Siem Reap, this cluster of three stilted villages is home to a community of farmers and fishermen.
- Kampong Khleang: Situated about an hour from Siem Reap, this more remote stilted village sees fewer visitors, providing a quieter, less crowded glimpse into life on the lake.
- Mechrey & Prek Toal: Mechrey, a fishing village 30-minutes from Siem Reap, serves as a gateway to Prek Toal, a bird sanctuary and Ramsar site. Prek Toal is Cambodia’s premier birdwatching destination and is best to visit during the dry months of December to April.
When to go?
High water season (June – November)
This is the classic, lush, and vibrant period. Due to the monsoon rains and the reversal of the Tonle Sap River, the lake swells to more than five times its dry-season size.
What you’ll see:
– Truly ‘floating’ villages: The stilt houses in villages like Kampong Phluk will be deep in the water, with locals paddling boats right up to their doorsteps.
– Lush, green scenery: The surrounding plains and forests are flooded, creating a beautiful, expansive waterway.
Keep in mind: This is the rainy season, so expect humidity and the possibility of short, heavy downpours, usually in the afternoon.
This season is great for: Travelers who want to see the iconic floating villages at their most impressive and experience the immense, ‘inland sea’ feel of the lake.
Low water season (December – April)
During these drier months, the lake shrinks dramatically, revealing a completely different, but equally fascinating, landscape.
What you’ll see:
– Towering stilt houses: This is the best time to appreciate the incredible engineering of the villages. The houses stand on stilts up to 10 meters high, with daily life happening on the ground far below.
– Excellent birdwatching: This is the prime season for seeing birdlife. From December to February, the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary is a globally important breeding ground for rare species like the Spot-billed Pelican and Greater Adjutant.
– Pleasant weather: You’ll enjoy clearer skies, lower humidity, and more comfortable temperatures.
Keep in mind: As you mentioned before, the drive to the boats is longer. The overall landscape is drier and less green.
This season is great for: Birdwatching enthusiasts, photographers who want to capture the unique stilt architecture, and visitors who prefer drier, cooler weather.
