July in Japan brings with it the full swing of summer, often characterized by warm, humid days and a vibrant atmosphere. For travellers, it can be a fantastic time to discover a different side of things, usually with fewer crowds in comparison to the peak spring and autumn seasons.
This quieter period offers an ideal opportunity to explore some of Japan’s most captivating regions in greater depth:
- Agent FAM Trip to Tohoku and Hokuriku: We hosted an exclusive FAM Trip for five of our agent partners, taking them to the scenic Tohoku and Hokuriku regions. These areas, known for their stunning natural beauty, rich history and unique cultural experiences, offer a refreshing alternative to more traditional routes. This trip allowed our agents to personally experience the charm and potential of these regions, equipping them with invaluable insights to share with their clients.
- Internal FAM Trips to Tohoku and the Japanese Alps: EXO Tokyo staff joined three FAM trips, focusing on the breathtaking Japanese Alps and Tohoku region. In one trip, we explored the historic Nakasendo trail and the serene beauty of Kamikochi, another one focused on the Nagano City area, with the activities available there, and the third one familiarizing with the Sendai, the gateway of Tohoku and Kakunodate with its samurai history and amazing countryside experiences. These internal trips are crucial for our team members to experience our tours, understand the logistics on the ground, and connect directly with our local suppliers. This personal engagement ensures our tours and experiences are continuously refined to reflect the authentic spirit of each location.
By undertaking these trips during the low season, we aim to gain an even deeper appreciation for Japan’s diverse offerings and solidify our expertise, all while minimising impact on peak travel times.
Destination News
- Odakyu Railway Enhances Convenience with Credit Card Touch Payment:
Great news for travellers using the Odakyu Railway! The company has recently implemented a system for credit card touch payments at their train gates. This advancement aims to provide smoother and quicker entry for international visitors, making travel around the greater Tokyo area even more convenient.
- New Oversized Baggage Compartment on Certain Bullet Trains:
Passengers traveling on certain Shinkansen lines (including the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen) from 1st July, have access to a new type of luggage storage: the “Oversized Baggage Compartment.” These compartments, located near the decks, provide dedicated space for luggage. While travellers with oversized bags (over 160cm in total dimensions) are still required to reserve a “seat with an oversized baggage area” in advance, these new compartments offer an additional, secure option for luggage storage. Note that an IC card or a credit card is mandatory for locking the luggage rack.
- PokéPark KANTO: A New Pokémon Theme Park Opening in 2026
Exciting news for Pokémon fans! Japan is set to open its first permanent outdoor Pokémon-themed attraction, “PokéPark KANTO,” in 2026. Located within the popular Yomiuriland amusement park not far from central Tokyo area, this expansive new area will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Pokémon.
It will feature two main zones: “Pokémon Forest,” where guests can discover over 600 Pokémon in naturalistic settings, and “Sedge Town,” a bustling hub with shops, a Pokémon Center, and themed attractions. Tickets are expected to go on sale in late 2025, offering a fantastic new draw for families and fans visiting Japan.
- Obon Holiday 8th-17th August:
Obon, a significant summer holiday period in Japan in mid-August, is a time of intensive domestic travel. Travellers should be aware that during this peak period, especially on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, the fastest Nozomi trains often operate with “All Reserved Seats” (ARS). This means there are no non-reserved seats available on Nozomi trains during this rush, and we strongly advise securing tickets well in advance.
Please also note that the EXO office will be closed on August 14th and 15th in observance of the Obon holiday.
