Boun Ork Phansa, also known as the ‘Festival of Light’, is a special celebration that reflects the Lao people’s deep spiritual beliefs and their strong sense of community.
For travellers, Boun Ork Phansa presents not only incredible photo opportunities but also a chance to partake in a celebration that is deeply rooted in the local culture and tradition.
The festival marks the end of Buddhist Lent, a three-month period of spiritual reflection and restraint for monks. It coincides with the full moon of the eleventh lunar month which translates to 17 Oct 2024 and 7 Oct 2025 on the Gregorian calendar.
In the days leading up to the event, temples and homes are decorated with candles and colourful paper lanterns in anticipation.
Then, on Boun Ork Phansa day, vibrant festivities ensue across the country as monks emerge from their retreats and communities come together to celebrate their return. A special candlelight parade in the evening marks the culmination of the festival.

Festival activities
Although Boun Ork Phansa is celebrated throughout Laos, the best place for travellers to experience the festival and candlelight parade is in Luang Prabang. The town takes on a special atmosphere as the local community prepares for the event.
On Boun Ork Phansa day, the morning tak bat alms procession is an incredible site for visitors to witness. Hundreds of monks walk the streets in silence, collecting alms from residents. This ritual is an integral part of daily life in Laos but it is larger and more significant as lent comes to a close.
In the evening, the streets of Luang Prabang transform into a parade awash in colour and light, marking the culmination of the festival. Thousands of candles are lit, creating a sea of light that illuminates the evening. The parade typically features beautifully decorated floats, traditional music and vibrant processions, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
