Korea’s DMZ: A guide to planning a visit

Tips for planning a DMZ day tour from Seoul

Korea’s DMZ is a significant historical and geopolitical site. A day tour from Seoul offers an on-the-ground perspective of Korea’s complex past and present.

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), established in 1953 following the Korean War armistice, serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. Spanning 250 kilometres across the Korean Peninsula, it stands as one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world.

Located approximately 50 kilometres north of the capital, a visit to the DMZ is a popular Seoul day trip. Visitors can explore key historic landmarks, catch a glimpse of North Korea and learn about ongoing efforts towards reconciliation and peace.

A DMZ tour is a great addition to a Korea itinerary for travellers seeking to understand the complexities of Korean history, the ongoing conflict and the fragile peace that persists today.

However due to the special nature of the destination, a set of regulations are in place that affect the arrangement and logistics of visit. Read on to learn more

DMZ tours: Tickets and guides

Under South Korean regulation, all tours into the DMZ are conducted on a shared basis with a designated DMZ guide.

The official DMZ tours start from Imjingak Park at the entrance to the special military zone. From that point onwards, guests must join a group with shared transportation and designated DMZ guide (the maximum group size is 43 persons).

Private vehicles and individuals are not allowed to move independently in this special and secured zone. The tour itself takes around four hours.

Entrance tickets to the DMZ can only be purchased on-site on the day of entry and, as a result, queue times can be long during peak season. In the winter months (Oct to Mar), waiting time is usually less than 15 minutes however in the peak period (April to September), waiting time can extend up to two hours.

Guests must bring their passport as it will be checked before entering the DMZ.

Getting to the DMZ

The journey from Seoul to the DMZ’s entrance at Imjingak Park takes around one hour. Guests can opt for a private transfer or join a tour from the city centre, with shared transportation.

Private transfer: EXO recommends leaving Seoul at 08.00 AM. Guests will travel by private, air-conditioned vehicle with a driver and guide to Imjingak Park; however from that point onwards they must join the official DMZ tour groups. The private guide may also join the group tour but neither guests nor guide will be allowed to separate from the group. After the tour, they can return to Seoul by private vehicle.

Join-in Group Transfer: Guests will be picked up by minibus from their Seoul hotel between 07.00-07.50 AM and transferred to the group meeting point near Myeongdong Station. The bus will depart for the DMZ between 08.00-08.30.  Following the tour, the bus returns the group to Seoul’s city centre, dropping guests at Hongdae Station or City Hall. From there, guests must make their own way back to the hotel.
