Rainy season is a topic that comes up often in conversation with our partners.

Is it comfortable to visit then? How bad is it really?

While we’ve yet to see how wet this whole summer will be, the rainy season might not be exactly as many travellers imagine. Many days in June and early July can be overcast, but it’s not a constant stormy situation. Instead, early summer is punctuated by on and off drizzle – with sometimes heavy showers – that can lead to high humidity. Still, there are consecutive days where the skies are clear and it’s not common to have a completely rained out vacation.

With a handy umbrella and the proper shoes, the rainy season is no reason for travellers to avoid early summer in Japan. Crowds are typical lighter at this time of year, and Japan’s famous gardens are simply stunning with lush, wet moss and glistening foliage. It’s also the season for hydrangea flowers to blossom, and many gardens and temples hold special openings to see these magnificent blooms.

If you are working with clients who are seeking to find a time of year when crowds are lighter and they can enjoy a unique side of Japan, consider early summer. Our Travel Consultants are always standing by to answer any questions you may have about travel in this special time of year.

Destination News

Narita Airport Expansion – Plans are in place to expand the flight volume capabilities of Tokyo’s Narita Airport by 60% by March 2029. A third runway will be added and the three existing terminals combined into one, making Narita the second-largest airport in Japan after Haneda.

Plans for Pre-Arrival Screening of Visitors – Japan will launch a system of pre-arrival screening for visa-free travellers from 71 nations in 2028. Visitors will fill out travel and personal details online several days before arrival. This is being introduced in an effort to create smoother entry and shorter lines at immigration.

Noto Peninsula Reconstruction – After being devastated by January 2024 earthquake, the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture is still struggling to rebuild. Tourism is paused in the area, but a milestone is being celebrated as the first group of students from Tokyo were welcomed in Noto to take part in educational activities. EXO is eagerly awaiting the reopening of tourism in Noto so that we may continue sharing this special region with travellers.
