The Plain of Jars is mysterious and intriguing. The monolith relics comes in varying shapes and sizes and are usually clustered in groups across the verdant landscape of the Xieng Khouang plateau in Northern Laos. Shrouded in myths, legends and theories, the origins and reasons for them remains unsolved to this day. Perhaps you can pay a visit to this archaeological site and give your reasons to its existence.

Strolling through finely preserved UNESCO Heritage towns may give you the perfect glimpse as to how life in Southeast Asia was like hundreds of years ago. Hoi An, Vietnam is a fine example, with centuries-old Chinese style shophouses lining the narrow streets and meandering river of the Old Town. Luang Prabang evokes an old-world charm feel as well with Wat Xieng Thong and other finely preserved temples set in a scene of tree-lined boulevards and pockets of French-style architecture.

Thailand’s past is highlighted by two former kingdoms, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. Both were once capitals and feature a similar setting of temples, pagodas and Buddha images yet with vastly contrasting architectural styles. Ayutthaya is a great day trip option from Bangkok, located approximately 80km from the capital. Sukhothai represents the blossoming of Thai culture and arts, with the Archeological Park located amongst canals, sugar palms and frangipani.

Bagan is truly something else. Nowhere else in the world will you be able to see about 2000 temples and pagodas scattered across the plains like this. In fact, at one time in history, the area had about 13,000. A bird’s eye view of the area onboard a hot air balloon should put the superb scenery into perspective, as well as offering you a memorable and exciting experience in the skies.

Perhaps the most influential kingdom in the region is the Khmer Empire. Its greatest legacy is Angkor where the centerpiece Angkor Wat and numerous other temples are located. The empire’s influence can be seen throughout the region with Wat Phu in Laos and Prasat Hin Phimai in Northeastern Thailand showcasing the unique Khmer architectural style that continues to shape Southeast Asian culture today.
