Aesthetics have long played a central part in the culture of Cambodia. The temples at Angkor are widely recognised as one of history’s crowning architectural achievements. Meanwhile, a few generations later, the colonial and post-colonial eras ushered in a new age of Khmer creativity , reflected in everything from architecture to music, film and art.
The dark days of Khmer Rouge rule and its aftermath served to stunt this blossoming, but guests visiting today can appreciate the country’s unique artistic heritage in a number of often-indulgent ways.
Available journeys vary in scope. In the capital Phnom Penh, a vibrant architectural scene can be appreciated through informative walking tours, while a similar experience can be enjoyed in sleepy Battambang. Other unforgettable memories can be created through sunrise appreciation of the temples at Angkor and an insight to Cambodia’s incredible artistic heritage with one of the country’s most innovative creative collectives.
OUR FAVOURITE EXPERIENCES
PHNOM PENH ART & ARCHITECTURE TOUR
MOONLIGHT DINNER AND STORYTELLING AT ANGKOR-ERA TEMPLE
Enjoy a magical moonlight dinner at Preah An Kau Sai, the only Angkor-era ruins in Siem Reap town. Dine by candlelight beside centuries-old sandstone structures and enjoy live music performances and storytelling of Cambodian history and origins of the Angkor era.
Be enchanted by a different side of Cambodian culture. Attend an evening at Phare, a circus-like show combining modern and traditional Khmer theatre. Learn about daily life and customs through the graceful movements of the performers and chat with them afterwards.
RUM DISTILLERY TOUR AND TASTING WITH CREOLE CUISIN
Travel by remork to George’s Rhumerie. Enjoy an explanation of the rum-making process from the distiller himself, sampling the cane juice from which the rum is made. Next, enjoy a selection of infused rums, 12 in all. As George’s Rhumerie is well-known for its creole cuisine, French food originating from Reunion Island, a selection of appetizers pairs excellently with both the rum and some of the sauces too.
