EXO Steps Up Climate Change Action With Tourism Declares

In our latest effort in climate change action, we have decided to join industry players alike in declaring a climate emergency and taking action to work together with each other to find solutions.

Having operated in Asia for more than 25 years, we’ve seen first hand the realities of climate change unfold before us and have over the years pioneered and implemented numerous efforts to help fight climate change. In our latest step, we have decided to join industry players alike in declaring a climate emergency and taking action to work together with each other to find solutions.

Together with 66 (and growing) travel companies, organisations and professions, we’ve put our name down on Tourism Declares in declaring a climate emergency and taking purposeful action to reduce our carbon emissions as per the advice from The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030.

Like all signatories, we have committed to the following five actions:

1. Develop a ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ within the next 12 months, which sets out our intentions to reduce carbon emissions over the next decade. Our plan will reflect our long term commitment and tangible actions we are taking in this direction.

2. Share an initial public declaration of our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’, and update our progress every year in our published annual reports.

3. Accept current IPCC advice stating the need to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030 in order to keep the planet within 1.5 degrees of warming. We’ll ensure our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ represents actions designed to achieve this as a minimum, through delivering transparent, measurable and increasing reductions in the total carbon emissions per customer arising from our operations and the travel services sold by us.

4. Encourage our suppliers and partners to make the same declaration; sharing best practice amongst peers; and actively participate in the Tourism Declares community.

5. Advocate for change. We recognise the need for system change across the industry and call for urgent regulatory action to accelerate the transition towards zero carbon air travel..

OUR ONGOING EFFORTS TOWARDS CARBON NEUTRALITY

Our efforts to fight climate change are numerous and have been consistent over the past years. We first started by measuring our company’s operations carbon footprint including travel, office use, and staff commutes and set up reduction targets. At the same time, we have been driving positive change among our supply chain and working on solutions to reduce the negative impact of the tours we operate on communities and the environment.

We realise that it was not enough and we are now fully offsetting them. We have calculated with third party companies, the average carbon footprint of our travellers when they are on their holiday in Asia and we offer our clients an option to offset it in a three-pronged strategy to Fund, Protect, and Regrow in order to ensure that the destinations where they operate remain beautiful for future generations to come.

In the near future, we have plans to redouble our efforts to minimise our travellers carbon footprints, promote wildlife experiences that encourage the preservation of natural habitats, regrow forests in Vietnam and Borneo and work with our partners to purchase carbon credits to offset all emissions created.

With the lead of our not-for-profit arm EXO Foundation and our sustainability teams in six of our ten destinations in Asia, we are determined to drive our sustainability agenda forward and work together with industry players for a greener future.
