Choosing a more responsible hotel is an easy way for travellers and partners to reduce the negative impacts of travel on the environment. To help our global network of travel agents make informed decisions, EXO partnered with Hotel Resilient to create an online platform that ranks and reviews hotels based on a range of sustainability metrics.
The organisation summarises the key indicators of the property’s commitment to sustainability and ranks it based on a series of criteria. As a result, partners can log-in from anywhere at any time and search for responsible hotels within a destination or search for a specific property by name.
For example, Hotel Resilient provides an ‘at a glance’ snapshot of which hotel is offering water bottle refillable stations, if their employees are trained on child protection, details of ownership structure and other important criteria.
By making this data easy to access, EXO encourages its business partners to select hotels that are actively working to reduce their environmental impact. In turn, we expect that hotels will be more motivated to improve their business model to achieve higher scores and more bookings.
At present, Hotel Resilient features hotels from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam with Thailand launching in late 2024. Read on to learn more.

How it works
To be listed on the Hotel Resilient platform, hotels must complete a series of 60 questions on topics from Human Resources management, to environmental actions and local community support. The assessments and supporting data are evaluated based on a set of criteria developed by industry experts and aligned with the GSTC criteria.
Once the audit is completed, hotels are displayed on the platform alongside a summary of their results. For categories in which they excelled, scores are displayed on the listing page to provide users with an at-a-glance understanding of the hotel’s rankings.

Why it’s important
EXO continuously seeks ways to make travel more sustainable and to inspire others in the travel industry to follow suit.
To do this, EXO uses a system called ‘Travel for Good’ to evaluate our products and provide clear data to our sales teams and customers, helping guide their decisions toward positive choices.
With hotels being individually owned and operated, having a similar set of accurate, searchable data was more challenging.
‘Through the connection made by PATA and Travelife, we partnered with Hotel Resilient to jointly develop a solution for auditing the responsible practices of hotels,’ Alexandra explains. ‘It is an initiative that, despite the challenges posed by the COVID crisis, came to fruition in 2023.’
