New Steps in Our Carbon Neutral Journey

New Steps in Our Carbon Neutral Journey

Our Carbon Neutral Journey

In recognition of our changing climate due to human activity, in 2015 we decided to be part of the solution by beginning a path towards net carbon neutrality, working with external and independent partners to reduce the footprint of our company and the products we design for travellers. We began by looking at our own operations, reducing our carbon footprint wherever possible and, in doing so, we drastically reduced the amount of waste we produced and streamlined our energy consumption.

After reducing our own carbon footprint and encouraging our hotels and suppliers to do the same, in 2016 we decided to then offset the unavoidable carbon emissions from our offices and staff travels. Then, in 2018we brought this a step further by automatically offsetting the carbon emissions from every guest’s domestic flight. Edging further still towards carbon neutrality, in 2019 we offered you the ability to choose to offset the carbon emissions from every guests’ trip, including their hotel stays, transportation and everything for just $1.50/person/day.

Through this programme, we were able to plant more than 20,000 trees in the mangroves of Indonesia, offset more than 5,000 metric tonnes of carbon through certified carbon credits supporting an improved cookstoves project in Laos, and purchased 5 hectares of land in Sumatra to be donated to conservation organisations for protection. This has been a huge win for the planet, and we are keen to build upon this success.

Our Carbon Neutral Future

The events of the last year have only strengthened our resolve to leverage travel as a force for good in the world. Now more than ever we have the ability to shape the tourism industry in a way where destinations are uplifted by tourism. We are now presented with the opportunity to rebuild travel better: with destinations, their environments, and those living in them being protected while helping to combat climate change.

To this end, we would like to relaunch our commitment towards our carbon-neutral goals and we have decided to include the offset all the carbon emissions from all our guests’ trips in 2021 at no extra cost to you.

For travel dates from 2022 onwards, the cost of carbon offsetting will now automatically be built into the cost of all bookings, with the option for you to opt-out in case you have made alternative arrangements. The rate applied will be as announced in November 2019 at $1.50 usd/person/day for packaged bookings with multiple services. For simple bookings such as hotel stays and transfers only, we will be applying a rate of just $0.50 usd/person/day to more accurately reflect the impact.

We are happy to be taking these steps with you and hope that, together, we can build a better, more sustainable future for tourism.
