Launched in 2021, EXO Travel’s Carbon Neutral Holiday Fund provides a tangible way for travellers to offset the environmental impact of their journeys.
While travel inevitably impacts the environment, through flights, transfers and activities, there are ways to minimise these effects. Through our Travel for Good initiative, EXO Travel actively develops and promotes carbon-friendly experiences, such as walking tours and the use of public transportation.
However, it’s impossible to eliminate all emissions entirely. The Carbon Neutral Holiday Fund complements these efforts by calculating the carbon emissions from every aspect of a guest’s trip and offsetting them through meaningful sustainability projects.
Through this fund, every carbon emission generated during a guest’s journey is either absorbed or compensated, ensuring a truly carbon-neutral holiday and empowering travellers to contribute to a more sustainable future.
How It Works
At the time of booking, a $1.50 USD per person per day contribution is automatically included in the quotation to offset the estimated emissions generated during the journey. This amount is based on the average cost of offsetting emissions for trips arranged by EXO Travel.
The funds collected through this Carbon Neutral Holiday Fund are channelled into impactful environmental projects. The fund has supported global carbon credit programs, such as wind farms, as well as significant local projects such as afforestation efforts in Vietnam and the recent establishment of the EXO Forest in southern Thailand.
Partnering with Click-A-Tree and the Conserve Natural Forests team, we began planting and nurturing over 16,000 saplings on land that was previously razed for mining. This project not only offsets carbon but also restores vital biodiversity in the area and supports the local community. And, by working with the Royal Forest Department, the EXO Forest has legal protection and will be preserved for future generations.
Looking ahead, we aim to expand the forest and explore additional projects like mangrove forest restoration, which offers exceptional carbon-capturing potential.
How we calculate our carbon footprint
Behind the scenes, we’ve worked with specialist organisations to develop advanced systems that measure and calculate carbon emissions. This effort began with a focus on our office operations, including energy consumption, waste generation, and carbon emissions from commuting and business travel.
We’ve extended this focus to our guests, assigning accurate carbon values to every service we provide, from domestic and regional flights to hotel stays and experiences. These calculations are built into our booking systems to estimate the carbon cost of every trip with precision.
By mid-2025, we aim to refine our calculations further with enhanced tools for measuring emissions from ground transportation, bringing even greater accuracy to our estimates.
