Over in Vietnam, a new if not unique religion is in session. Cao Dai combines different aspects from many of today’s big religions into one faith. The religion draws upon the ethical teachings of Confucianism, the cosmological ideologies of Taoism, karma and rebirth of Buddhism and the hierarchical organization found in Christianity. Yes, there is even a pope in Cao Dai. Major figures from these mentioned religions are recognized as saints such as Jesus Christ, Confucius, Muhammad and the Buddha as well as other important historical figures such as Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc and Victor Hugo amongst many others.
The religion is characterized by its unique temple, the colorful robes and cloaks the monks wear and the distinctive eye symbol. If you are in Ho Chi Minh City, Cao Dai is certainly worth seeing. Its main temple is in Tay Ninh, a town about 90 kilometers southwest of Vietnam’s biggest city.
