Wat Phou Temple, a hidden UNESCO World Heritage Site

Southern Laos is a relatively unknown region in Asia, and this is what makes it so fascinating and alluring. The tranquil banks of the Mekong River, the cool climates of the Bolaven Plateau and the sleepy lives of those living in and around the 4000 islands is the perfect respite from the throngs of tourists found in other parts of Asia. However, what is often overlooked in this untouched part of Laos is the magnificent Wat Phou Temple in Champasak.

Wat Phou, otherwise known as Vat Phou, dates back more than 1000 years, and in 2001 was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Parts of the large complex, expressing the Hindu vision between nature and humanity, even date back to a pre-Angkor period. It is estimated that the site represents developments between the 5th and 15th centaury, whereas Angkor in neighboring Cambodia contains remains dated between the 9th and 15th century.

Wat Phou ‘exhibits a remarkable complex of monuments and other structures over an extensive area between river and mountain, some of outstanding architecture, many containing great works of art, and all expressing intense religious conviction and commitment’ states UNESCO. The overall complex is large and includes several large reflection pools and statues. All these figures are designed to reflect the ethos of goodness and strength behind the Khmer Empire.

Southern Laos can be visited year round, however the driest months are between November and March.  The annual Wat Phou Festival which takes place in February is based on Buddhist festive principles and commemorates all of whom have contributed to the architectural marvel of the temple. Expect to see throngs of people enjoying music, theatrical dance, local sports, and tangy local cuisine. On the final day of celebrations senior dignitaries and religious figures meet to take part in a traditional alms ceremony.  This is a busy festival and not for the faint hearted!

The Wat Phou Festival is set to take place between the 14th and 15th February 2014.
