Ever wonder where the Mekong River winds up? Well, into the South China Sea, of course. But before it empties out into the ocean, it passes through an area in Southern Vietnam known as the Mekong Delta. It is quite interesting down there. Floating markets and waterside villages make up the area, one rich in biodiversity and serene rice fields.

Speaking of rice fields, half of the country’s rice production comes from this very area. And to touch on the area’s biodiversity, a large amount and variation of the country’s fruit comes from here, as well as orchids, fish and crustaceans. The area is so rich in fauna and flora life that new species are continually being discovered each year.

If you like snakes, then this is the place to be. Dong Nam Snake Farm in Can Tho is Vietnam’s largest snake farm. Beware; non-venomous and poisonous types are here. What you’ll also see are bottles of snake wine. Yes, what you’ve pictured as snake wine is true. Snakes (usually the venomous ones) are infused into glass bottles of rice wine and whisky, ready to be consumed at a local bar near you. And what’s the good of drinking it? It is said that it increases fertility! The venom is dissolved and denatured by the ethanol, so it is safe to consume it. Dare to try?

So, what is life like in the Mekong Delta? Quite aquatic. Boats are as common a sighting as motorcycles in Saigon, but not as congested of course. You’ll also come across colorful floating markets selling foods, fruits, textiles and other goods. Phung Hiep floating market in Hau Giang Province is the largest and a nearby bridge is an excellent spot to take photographs. Cai Rang Floating Market, near Can Tho is another popular place. Who knows, you may even come upon one of those snake wine bottles.
