An increase in tourist numbers visiting the region means that tracts of truly unexplored paradise are in short supply in Southeast Asia. One surviving gem, however, is the Mergui archipelago in southern Myanmar. Decades in self-imposed isolation weren’t regarded as being particularly positive for the country.

Yet, this extended exile did have the effect of helping to protect many of the pristine landscapes. So while destinations such as Koh Phi Phi and Phuket in Thailand are a favourite with tourists, the islands of the Mergui peninsula see a fraction of that traffic.
