Buddhism, especially the Thervadha school is prevalent in many parts of mainland Southeast Asia. This however, was not always the case. Many Vietnamese classify themselves as non-religious, however aspects of Mahayana Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism remain a strong influence on the people and their culture. The Cham Kingdom, who controlled South and Central Vietnam, went through a religious evolution throughout their rule; first Hindu, then Buddhism and finally Islam. Cambodia was at one time a predominantly Hindu country and was the official religion of the Khmers. Angkor Wat and most other Cambodian structures were built as Hindu structures, which later became Buddhist monasteries once the country changed to Thervadha Buddhism. Thailand, Myanmar and Laos are predominantly Thervadha Buddhist countries today with a strong religious past, culture and tradition.

Indonesia, is the world’s most populous Muslim country. Almost 90% adhere to this faith, most of the Sunni branch while Shias and Sufis make up the minority. The island of Bali is home to a major Hindu population, with over 93% following this faith. Buddhists in Indonesia make up about 1% of the population, with Borobudur being the main religious pilgrimage site.

European colonialism introduced Christianity to the region. Although minor in terms of population when comparing against other religions, there are in fact a good number of Christians in Southeast Asia. Colonial churches still stand today in many countries, which serve not only as a charming site but also as a place of worship.
