Nicely tucked away in Northern Thailand’s scenic and lush jungle mountains lie the small quaint town of Pai. Its position along the Pai River makes it an excellent base for outdoor. And why not bring the family along? The slower pace of life, varying landscapes and overall cooler weather than most other places in Thailand makes a Pai adventure a suitable outdoor family experience. In the space of five days, your entire family will be entertained as well as enlightened through a series of soft adventures in the great north.

Set out to Pai from Chiang Mai, by air or land. Either is fine, both are scenic. Just to let you know that the road leading to Pai can be a bit dizzying. That’s because the route from Chiang Mai has more twists and turns than your average 135 kilometer route. Because of this, drive time can take several hours. But it is well worth it! Spend the rest of the day exploring this little town or resting up for the exciting journey that awaits.

Kick the adventure tour off with an easy bike ride through the valley. Check out the area’s waterfalls, river scenery and hilltribe villages. It’s quite scenic and photo-worthy. Stop as often as you like to snap that perfect shot or interact with the hilltribes. End the day by watching the sun set over the horizon. And why not make the day better with a deserving evening foot massage?

If you like water rafting, then we got something for you. If you prefer trekking, then our hiking option may be what you are looking for. Rafters will zip down the Pai River along class 3-4 rapids and will spend the night in a bamboo hut in the jungle. Hikers will take a light trek to limestone caves and a rest at a village homestay. Both options not only showcase the area’s beauty, but also shed light on the local culture and lifestyle of the people here. Oh, and also some memorable times.

Those who chose the rafting option will continue rafting downstream to the Khong River. The trekkers will hike to the various hilltribe villages. Both sets of adventurers will end up in Mae Hong Son. And guess what, you are just steps away from the Burmese border. Get acquainted with this small town and continue your adventure by exploring its immediate surroundings on the back of an elephant and by longtail boat. Head back to town and then back to Chiang Mai for the conclusion of your adventure.

Pai is certainly a picturesque setting for a family adventure holiday. It’s still considered off the beaten path, so expect some authentic experiences and a unique way for kids and adults to discover the sceneries and people of the north.
