Cambodia’s wild bears are one of the country’s primary wildlife assets. For centuries the magnificent beasts have roamed free in wilderness areas such as The Cardamom Mountains. Their very existence, however, is under threat due to a range of factors including land encroachment, illegal logging and wildlife poaching.
Working to save the country’s population of bears, the Free the Bears project has educated hundreds of thousands of Cambodians about the crisis facing the nation’s wild bears. An hour’s drive from the capital Phnom Penh is Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, the world’s largest sanctuary for sun bears. This unique journey offers an insight to the bears that have been rescued from captivity and given refuge at the sanctuary. After finding out more about the animals, guests can go behind the scenes to learn about what it takes to be a bear keeper.
