Tips for exploring AlUla's ancient sites and modern delights

Once a crossroads for trade routes, AlUla is rapidly transforming into a hotspot for travellers seeking a unique blend of history, adventure and contemporary experiences.

AlUla is teeming with history and, with a number of remarkably well preserved ancient monuments, exploring AlUla is akin to visiting an open-air museum.

It boasts Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra, a fascinating ancient burial site, alongside other remarkable relics from the Nabataean Kingdom.

But AlUla’s appeal extends beyond its historical treasures, with the modern architectural marvel of Maraya, vibrant AlJadidah arts district, spectacular natural wonders and a world-class dining scene offering a broad spectrum of experiences for travellers.

Recent years have witnessed a surge in tourism, fueled by the Kingdom’s commitment to preserve and promote its natural and cultural heritage.

Read on to discover EXO’s guide to AlUla, with an introduction to the main sites, tips for planning a journey, suggestions on where to stay and a selection of inspiring experiences that reveal AlUla’s rich tapestry of wonders .

Key sites:

  • Hegra- Over 2,000 years old, Hegra is Saudi Arabia’s crown jewel of ancient cities. The Nabataean elite were laid to rest in over 110 carved tombs, some of which still have visible inscriptions.
  • Elephant Rock– This natural sandstone formation towers 52 metres high, shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion. It is a popular sunset location, thanks to the spectacular colours created by the evening sunlight.
  • Maraya-  Maraya is a modern architectural wonder constructed of 9740 mirrored panels.  The outside forms an impressive backdrop for photos while the interior is a concert hall with regularly scheduled performances.
  • AlJadidah Arts District- The pedestrian-friendly streets of AlJadidah are a hub for creative culture, with cafes, murals and galleries showcasing the works of contemporary artisans.

Length of Stay: Although one could see AlUla’s heritage sites in a day trip, EXO recommends spending at least three nights. This allows time to discover the town’s vibrant cultural scene, the surrounding desert and to indulge in the dining and leisure activities available.

What to pack: Modest dress (knees and shoulders covered) is expected when travelling through Saudi Arabia. When exploring AlUla, it’s recommended to wear light fabrics and a hat to protect from the sun and shoes, rather than sandals, to protect feet from hot sand.
