So, you’ve made the decision, you’re coming to Southeast Asia for your vacation. Good choice. For many, this is a faraway place, an exotic region that is warm (some may call it hot), humid but full of fun surprises. Yes, all this is true. But what should you bring along? For many, this is a question that plagues first time (and even multiple) travelers to the region. Read on to find out what should be in the suitcase before you head to the airport.

The general rule is this, pack light! Most places will be hot and humid, pretty much all year round. Plus, you’ll have space in your bag for extra clothes, souvenirs or anything else you may buy and bring back home with you. So, what you want to do is to bring:

• light cotton clothes
• slippers
• sunglasses
• hat

Now, be warned that if you enter a holy place or a highly revered site, you may be required to conceal your body. For that bring:

• t-shirt or polo shirt
• long pants
• shoes

So, that takes care of the hot side. What about the rains and occasional cool weather? Southeast Asia gets most of its rain in a six month span, usually from May to October. For that season bring:

• umbrella
• raincoat (may be unnecessary because it is so hot and sticky your raincoat will be uncomfortable)
• shoes (slippers may be too slippery

It is not necessary, however, as you can buy rain protected gear at just about anywhere in the region. Plus, it will save space in your suitcase.

The cool season, for most of Southeast Asia that lies in the Northern Hemisphere, lasts from December to February. For many, it is still warm, but for some people (especially in the mornings and evenings), 15-22 degree weather can be a tad chilly, so throw a cardigan into the bag. However, if you are climbing mountains, you will have to bring a heavier jacket. In the mountains, it is cool in summer and pretty cold in the winter.

Dress light if you are in the city. Big metropolises are a magnet for heat and humidity, more so than in the countryside. However, once you venture out, the sun’s rays become stronger, so pack in some sunscreen. This holds especially true when you visit the beach. Yes, bring some swim gear as well (along with dive goggles if you wish; but most dive equipment will be available on-site). If you are hanging out by the beach, those shades and hat will come in handy as well.

Urban areas are safe places to get anything you may have forgotten. That includes

• clothes
• sunscreen
• mosquito repellent
• chargers
• flashlight
• first aid kit
• hiking gear
• swim gear
• and many more essential items
