Thailand, Malaysia Earn New UNESCO Honours

Recognition highlights the rich cultural and natural heritage of Southeast Asia

Two remarkable sites, one in Thailand and one in Malaysia, have recently been added to the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List at the organisation’s 46th Convention in July 2024.

The listing of Phu Phrabat Historical Park increases the number of World Heritage sites in Thailand to eight, including five in the cultural category. Phu Phrabat, located in the Udon Thani province, is renowned for its ancient rock formations and archaeological sites, showcasing a blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

Malaysia’s latest addition brings its total number of UNESCO listings to five, with two of these located in Sarawak. The newly recognized site emphasises Malaysia’s unique biodiversity and cultural diversity, contributing to the growing recognition of the country’s heritage treasures.

These new UNESCO World Heritage listings serve as a testament to the historical importance of Southeast Asia’s cultural and natural landmarks.

Malaysia: Niah National Park’s Caves

Niah National Park is located in Malaysia’s Sarawak state, on the island of Borneo. The lush rainforest is a biodiversity hotspot, teeming with rare and endangered species. It is also an archaeological treasure trove, with a complex series of interconnected limestone caves offering invaluable insights into early human history in Southeast Asia.

These caves, recently awarded UNESCO Heritage Status, contain the world’s longest records of human interaction with a rainforest, dating back at least 50,000 years. The site features prehistoric rock paintings, unusual boat-shaped burial mounds and archeological deposits that, according to UNESCO, ‘provide a deeper understanding of human development, adaptation and migration in a global context’.

How to visit: Niah National Park and the caves are located two hours from Miri, Sawarwak and can be visited on a day trip such as EXO’s Hidden Beauty of Niah Caves Experience

Thailand: Phu Phra Bat

Located in Udon Thani in Thailand’s northeast, Phu Phra Bat offers a unique blend of religious, historical and geological significance.

The sacred mountain is famed for its thousands of distinctive rock formations, many resembling human footprints believed to be the imprints of Buddha, attracting pilgrims and worshippers for centuries. The site includes the largest collection of in situ Sima stones in the world, a testament to Buddhist tradition that prevailed in the 7th-10th centuries.

The site also boasts prehistoric cave paintings on the surface of 47 rock shelters, evidence of two millennia of human occupation.

How to visit: Phu Phra Bat is 1.5 hours from Udon Thani. It can be visited as a day trip or part of an overland Isaan journey such as EXO’s Isaan and Northern Thai Explorer
