If you’re looking to fully absorb Northern Thailand’s atmosphere and appreciate the greenery that comes with it, then Pai may just be your destination.

If you’re looking to fully absorb Northern Thailand’s atmosphere and appreciate the greenery that comes with it, then Pai may just be your destination. This quaint town is located on the banks of the Pai River and surrounded by pristine nature, making it a good base for trekking and other outdoor excursions in the area. Plus with its mountainous terrain, you are sure to meet your fair share of friendly hilltribes.

The road to Pai is one for the ages. The scenery along the roads are just wonderful but may result in some dizziness. Why? That’s because the route from Chiang Mai has more turns and curves than your average 135 kilometer route. In case you were wondering, it is the famous Route 1095. The same goes from Mae Hong Son. And just to give you an idea, the town is 50 kilometers from Pai; if it is a straight line. The wining roads makes the total distance of 110 kilometers a whirlwind journey!

Once you’ve made it past the roller coaster ride, relax in a laid back town, a nice remedy for your motion sickness recovery. Most come to Pai for that very reason – just to relax. The town is also known for its live-music scene, traditional and contemporary artwork and food of all kinds. And not only that. Since the town was featured in two popular romantic Thai movies, travelers from Thailand are coming to this northern town to experience hopefully experience the same romantic magic in The Letter: Jod Mai Rak (2004) and Rak Jang (2006).

There are also things to see around town. Nearby are some nice waterfalls, namely Mae Yen, Pam Bok and Mo Paeng. Also nearby are hot springs, no more than 20 minutes away from town. One way of getting to these wonderful natural attractions is by bike.

The town also happens to be a great place for a family adventure! Over five days both kids and adults will be entertained as well as enlightened through a series of soft adventures in the great north. Biking, trekking, water rafting and excursions to local hilltribe villages are included. If you yearn for an off the beaten track outdoor experience, you should certainly make a date with Pai.
