Dalat – More than just your Average Vietnamese Hillside Town

What was once a hilltop destination for the French to escape the warm and humid weather of Southern Vietnam is now a popular site for those looking to escape the warm and humid weather of Southern Vietnam.

What was once a hilltop destination for the French to escape the warm and humid weather of Southern Vietnam is now a popular site for those looking to escape the warm and humid weather of Southern Vietnam. Some things just don’t change. The town is Dalat, and it is a nice change of pace from the balmy weather that characterizes Hanoi and others in that area. If you want to cool off a bit, then a trip to Dalat comes highly recommended.

It wouldn’t surprise us if you thought were in the French Alps instead of the South Central Highlands of Vietnam upon stepping foot into Dalat. The air, the architecture (look at the train station as an example) and the overall ambiance contributes to that feeling. But there are also pockets of Vietnamese character that will remind you where you are at. Also unique to the area are its pine trees that dot the landscape, a rarity in this part of the world (but more prevalent in the colder Western world). Mist also covers the valleys almost year-round, leading to its City of Eternal Spring title.

Be wary of the lovebirds! Couples and honeymooners love (no pun intended) to make a trip here. And why not? Its mountain setting, cool weather, beautiful clear-blue skies, fresh air and flower-filled parks are just made for romance. To further the romantic feel of the town, the charmingly named Valley of Love is nearby. At the floor of the valley is Da Thien Lake, where peddled and motorized boats are available for couples to rent. Xuang Houng Lake is another trendy spot for honeymooners. It is a manmade lake shaped like a crescent moon, surrounded by serene scenes of trees, green fields and and of course, couples strolling its banks.

Waterfalls are also a staple of Dalat. Prenn Falls is a beautiful rapid, offering tremendous hiking and picture taking opportunities. Pongour Falls is one of the largest and widest waterfalls in Vietnam, so you can already imagine how majestic it will be.

If you like golf, this is where you need to be. There sure is nothing like golfing in Southeast Asia with cool weather to back you up. With history (built in 1912) and natural beauty (gently crafted into the rolling hills of Dalat and overlooking Xuan Huong Lake), the Dalat Palace Golf Club comes highly recommended.

If you need to escape from the heat and humidity, or miss some aspects of the West, or are looking for a memorable golf experience, or want to spend a romantic time with your loved one, then Dalat definitely hits the spot. Our Deltas, Beaches and Plateaus tour deal offers a bit of everything Vietnam has to offer in terms of landscape and culture, including a scenic and memorable two night stay at this cool and charming mountain town.
