Beautifuls Beasts of Asia

A guide to Asia's incredible creatures and where to find them

The Asian continent teems with exotic wildlife, offering guests insight into some of the oldest and most pristine habitats on earth, as well as opportunities to explore them.

Through the EXO Foundation, we play an active role in protecting this precious natural heritage of Asia and, by extension, partners working with us do too. That’s something we can all feel proud of!

In celebration of this, here is a roundup of some incredible creatures of Asia, where to find them and some details regarding wildlife conservation projects we support to ensure they are protected for travelers, locals and future generations.

PROBOSCIS MONKEY

INDONESIAN & MALAYSIAN BORNEO

Instantly recognisable thanks to its oddly charming nose, these unforgettable beasts are endemic to the island of Borneo. Living in mangroves and humid forests, proboscis monkeys are strong swimmers and are likely to be seen with a cruise up the Kinabatangan River. Threatened with extinction due to deforestation, sanctuaries in Borneo are being set up for the conservation of the species. They can also be observed in Bako National Park in Malaysia.

MANTA RAYS

TROPICAL COASTS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA

Blessed with some of the world’s most diverse marine habitats thanks to the ‘Coral Triangle’, a vast swath of tropical sea between Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines, Southeast Asia is hollowed ground for scuba divers and lovers of the ocean. Manta rays rank highly among the most highly sought-after marine species for visitors to the region, and can often be seen in the waters surrounding Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Indonesia.

GREAT HORNBILL

MAINLAND SOUTHEAST ASIA & SUMATRA INDONESIA

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Asian toucan’, hornbills are a diverse group of birds that bare superficial resemblance due to their large beaks and vibrant colours. Found throughout Southeast Asia, the Great hornbill is perhaps the most iconic of all hornbill species. Measuring up to 160cm and 8kg, it is truly a sight to behold when it is seen and heard swooping through the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar.

ORANGUTAN

MALAYSIAN BORNEO, INDONESIA (BORNEO & SUMATRA)

As charming as it is iconic, this great, red-haired ape lives only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Its name is derived from a Malay word that means ‘man of the forest’. Observing them in the wild is an unforgettable experience that will leave little question in the minds of visitors as to why orangutans have captured imaginations for centuries. We have a wide range of options such as a visit to Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesia or Danum Valley in Malaysia for guests to see them in their natural habitat.

ASIAN ELEPHANT

THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST ASIA

So iconic they have become a symbol of wildlife in Asia, the native range of Asian elephants extends throughout much of Southeast Asia. While there are many responsible elephant camps and sanctuaries throughout the region where guests can see these gentle giants up-close and personal, nothing can beat the experience of observing truly wild elephants in their natural habitat. There are several areas in Thailand.

ASIATIC BEARS

THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST ASIA

Asiatic sun bears and black bears may not be as famous as some other Asian mammals, but they certainly rank among the most charming! Black bears are found in forested and mountainous regions. Guests wanting to observe these honey-loving critters can do so at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Sanctuary in Cambodia. Sun bears are the smallest bears in the world, living only in tropical forests, they are excellent climbers and often pass their days away in nests built from tree branches. Both Laos and Malaysia have unique sanctuaries where guests can observe them.
