Whether it is a Lake or a River, Cambodian Countryside Life stays the same on the Tonle Sap

A visit to the Tonle Sap serves many purposes. By being there, you are in the presence of Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake.

A visit to the Tonle Sap serves many purposes. By being there, you are in the presence of Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. The lake (and river at other times of year, explanation will come soon) is also of major importance to the Cambodian people. In addition, unique animals and plants species call the body of water home. Learn more about the lake with Exotissimo’s Authentic Tonle Sap day trip experience.

First, let’s take in some facts about the Tonle Sap. Yes, it is a lake. But it is also a river. During the dry season (December – May), the Tonle Sap drains into the Mekong River, while the body of water itself is a river. During the rainy months (June-November), the water reverses its flow (along with the accumulation of rain water) and the Tonle Sap’s water volume increases dramatically by more than four times in volume and depth thus becoming a lake.

Life around the river/lake body is pretty rustic. If you want to see and experience authentic countryside Cambodian life, this is the place to be. Our day trip takes you to Kampong Phluck, a Tonle Sap village that is rarely visited by tourists. The fishermen and villagers live in stilted houses amongst the forests and waterways. As you would expect, their residences will seem like floating houses when the Tonle Sap is a lake and will look like houses with tall skinny legs during the dry season.

Board a boat a cruise along the Tonle Sap to the village. See floating houses and impressive flood forests as you start to get a good feel of life here. Head to one of these houses for your lunch. The good taste comes from the lake. Yes, the Tonle Sap also provides food and ingredients for the people here. Take this opportunity to converse with your new Cambodian friends and find out more about life here in the Tonle Sap.
