Tanah Lot: Combining Balinese Mysticism with Stunning Sunset Ocean Views in West Bali

Tanah Lot is both the name for a rock formation on the coast of West Bali and a temple that sits on this rock formation, combining to form one of Indonesia’s most sought out attractions.  Tanah Lot may be simple in its design and construction but its dramatic ocean-front location certainly makes it one of the most picturesque.  If you love sunset shots and would like to capture your moment in one of Bali’s most sought after destinations, then Tanah Lot is certainly where you should be.  Just don’t forget to bring your camera!

Tanah Lot was built by a Hindu priest named Danghyang Nirartha in the 16th century.  The man was a constant traveler, but found the beach near Tanah Lot a relaxing and desirable place to settle down.  After spending the night here, Nirartha told the local fishermen to build a shrine on the rock formation, for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the sea gods.  The Hindu priest built six more sea temples similar to Tanah Lot with each temple being visible from the next and all forming one long chain.  It is also said that a giant snake guards the temple, which was made from Niratha’s scarf.

Major restoration work started in the 1990’s after it was evident that the rock the temple was on was being eroded and in danger of collapse.  There was major restoration work done at that time to fix the problem and conserve the historic temple.  To the naked eye, the rock faces around the temple looks real and natural.   However, over a third of the rocks are in fact cunningly disguised and artificial, part of the end result of Tanah Lot’s restoration project.

Of course, sunset is the best time to visit Tanah Lot.  This is also the busiest time, where many head to the beach to view the temple.  If you would like to evade the crowds, avoid the beach and instead turn right past the stage near the entrance and follow the path up the rocky headland that overlooks the temple.  Not only will you get great views of Tanah Lot, you will also avoid the crowds and be treated to a view of Pura Batu Bolong, a nearby temple built on a rocky promontory.

Pura Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most popular temples, and after seeing it for yourself, it is easy to understand why.   See the temple and learn about Bali’s heritage with Exotissimo’s Bali Culture & Cuisine tour.  The island’s artistic sensibility as well as its recreational and cultural scope will be revealed to you.  The temple will also be visited on our Tour Bali by VW Convertible trip.  This program takes you out of the tourist crowds and into the island’s lesser known attractions where you will explore mountain ranges, coastal scenery and historic sites while you enjoy the luxury of having your own chauffeur driven VW convertible.  Visit www.exotravel.com for other great holiday ideas into Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
