Colonialism has played a major influence in the shape and make up of Myanmar. Just head to Yangon and check out some of the structures there. But the legacy of the British stretches beyond the country’s biggest city. Myanmar can be a little hot for those chaps. That is why there is Pyin Oo Lwin, a hill town more than 1000 meters above sea level near Mandalay. And its beauty continues to live on. Yes, you are more than welcome to bask in this tranquil and refreshing colonial environment.

The town was founded in the late 19th century. And by looking at it now, not much seems to have changed. Colonial buildings still dot the town’s landscape. And the preferred mode of transportation? Nothing but the good old fashioned horse cart. Even the town’s clock tower reminisces back to Jolly old London, sounding like none other than Big Ben itself.

Ah, the cool mountain air sure is the right environment for a garden, isn’t it? This is no ordinary one, by the way. This is the National Kandawgyi Garden or Botanical Garden for simplicity’s sake. Established in 1915, the place consists of many English plant varieties. And you may agree with us, this is certainly one of the most beautiful gardens in Asia! If you are truly impressed and would like to replicate some of this beauty at your home, you can very well buy some seeds here and plant them in your own garden.

What else is around town? Lots! If you enjoy being around waterfalls, you’ve come to the right town. A half day hike out of here takes you to Anisakan Falls, where a small stupa sits side by side with the rapid. Another nearby waterfall is Pwe Kauk Falls, also known as Hampshire Falls during the colonial era. Locals love to come here for a picnic lunch, a great opportunity for you to integrate with the locals. An hour hike from this waterfall takes you to U Naung Gu Caves where several Buddha images are stationed.

Otherwise, while you’re in Pyin Oo Lwin, just relax. It is so refreshing up here. See what we mean when you bask in this hill town for yourself. Have you ever wondered how colonial life was like?
