One of Vietnam’s most popular exports, Pho soup is certainly a delicious treat. And the best place for it is…your own kitchen? Yes, you too can replicate this amazing delicacy. All you need are the ingredients and of course, the passion to create good soup. So, here is your chance to make the perfect pho. What will you need?
4 cups of beef stock (any other meat can be substituted)
180 grams of beef (any other meat can be substituted)
130 grams of rice vermicelli
1 inch piece of ginger, finely sliced
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tablespoon of chili paste
1 table spoon of sugar
3 green onions, sliced
100 grams of bean sprouts
1 tablespoon of fish sauce
For additional garnishes that will be arranged on the dining table, the following would do (how much or how little is up to the diner):
Basil
Mints
Cilantro
Sliced or ground chili
Lime wedges
Before cooking anything, make sure the beef you have is thinly sliced. Leave that aside after you are done. Also make sure the noodles are soft by leaving it in hot water for about 15-20 minutes.
Now comes the cooking part. Leave the beef stock in a pot under medium fire. Once it has come to a boil, add the ginger, garlic, sugar, chili paste and fish sauce. Let it boil and simmer for an additional two minutes.
Add in the noodles, bean sprouts and green onions. Next, put in the beef and watch it cook in about half a minute or so if the meat is thin enough.
It is now ready to serve. The basil, mints and cilantro should be added immediately if you like your soup to have a minty taste. Make sure to stir it around into the soup so the flavors pan out throughout the bowl. Chili definitely adds some character to the soup. Add a lot in if you dare. And squeeze in as much or as little lime as you wish to complete the pho taste.
Bon apetit! Enjoy one of Vietnam’s favorite dishes.
