What are the Gili Islands?  Where are they?  The Gili Islands, otherwise known as the Gilis are a set of three islands just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia and approximately 35 kilometers off the eastern tip of Bali.  The islands are Gili Trawangan (the biggest of the three), Gili Meno (the middle island) and Gili Air (the closest island to Lombok).

The small sizes of these islands make motorized transportation totally unnecessary.  In fact, all motorized vehicles are not permitted on the islands.  Imagine yourself on a bicycle with the ocean by your side or in a horse drawn carriage and able to easily loop the island in just a matter of minutes.  Or walking on the beach and loop back to your resort in just a couple of hours?  All without a single car or motorbike to disturb the peace.

Oh, and don’t forget, all three islands feature crystal clear blue ocean waters, spectacular coral reefs and some of the best dive spots in and around Lombok and Bali.  The islands are only a couple of kilometers apart, making island hopping easy.  But please, DO NOT SWIM TO THE OTHER ISLANDS!  The currents between the Gilis are strong and very dangerous!  Catch the shuttle boats instead.  They are available throughout the day and are a fun and scenic way to traverse between the islets.
