Myanmar is colorful as it is exotic. This magical land is an amalgamation of eye-opening religious structures, majestic ruins that stand the test of time, smiling folks who show warmth and affection despite the hardships they go through and stunning landscapes ranging from green rolling hills, tropical forests, beaches and even snow capped mountains. At the center of all this is Yangon, the former capital but still commercial center and the country’s biggest city. This is the best place to get accustomed to the exoticism and mysticism of Myanmar. And you’ll do so beyond its city boundaries into Dhala, a nearby town.
Welcome to Yangon. Step out for a quick orientation of the city. First stop, the famous golden structure of Shwedagon Pagoda. This is Burma’s most sacred site. Within its confines are relics of the past four Buddhas enshrined within, namely the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Konagamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa and eight hairs of Gautama, the historical Buddha. The downtown Sule Pagoda, filled with millennia-old mystique and intrigue sits in the middle of Yangon while traffic and citizens pass it by. The city is also well known for its parks and lakes including the Zoological Garden and Kandawgyi Lake, one of the most soothing spots in the city.
After getting a feel for what Yangon is about, transfer to Nanthida Jetty to board a ferry and cross the Yangon River to the town of Dhala. The trip itself is a mere 15 minutes but filled with fascinating scenes of bustling markets where locals come to buy and sell their wares. Hop off the boat and reach the town by trishaw.
Notice the complete change of scenery and atmosphere the moment you step foot into the town and the huge gap between life in Yangon and here. This is the Burmese countryside. One thing does remain though, the warm and hospitable smiles, even though the standard of living here is much much lower than it is in the big city.
Visit the main village and its central market for a better understanding of how life out here is. Then, head to the temple to learn about monastic life in Myanmar. For many, this is where people escape from the realities of the present world by performing good deeds, making merit and finding peace of mind.
Return by boat to Yangon, observing life along the river and reflecting back on your excursion to Dhala and the Colors of Yangon.
