Indonesian Islands to Combine with Bali

Explore beyond Bali with these inspiring island extensions

With the recent full reopening of Indonesia, it’s time to start planning the epic island adventure you’ve been dreaming of for the last two years. While the ‘Island of the Gods’ is full of exotic beaches , incredible culture , and incredible encounters, it is but one of more than 17,000 islands in a vast archipelago consisting of wondrous islands, each with their own unique intrigue. Why not have your cake and eat it too by combining a trip to Bali with a trip to these other amazing places at the same time?

With that aspiration in mind, here is a look at some of the great island extensions visitors can make during their trip to Bali.

GILI ISLANDS

The Gilis are three tiny islands – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air – off the northwest coast of Lombok. Each has its own personality, yet all sport the same idyllic waters and quiet beaches. They’re all quite well-developed, with accommodation options that range from rustic to deluxe. Snorkel, dive, swim, party or simply relax on sunsoaked shores.

LOMBOK

On the east side of Bali, this comparatively untouched island boasts dramatic volcanic landscapes, blissful deserted bays, waterfalls, a pink coral-sand beach, white beaches with turquoise waters and the unique Sasak culture. Far less touristy than Bali, Lombok’s laidback peace and pristine natural areas are perfect for more adventurous travellers. Explore the island by cycle or go up to Mount Rinjani…

KOMODO & FLORES ISLANDS

The island of Flores, which means ‘flower’ in Portuguese, is located between the Saru and Flores Sea. The most enticing attraction of the island, and what brings most travellers to Flores, is Mt Kelimutu, a soaring volcano with unique colored crater lakes, in aquamarine, ochre red and brow.

Neighboring Flores is Komodo National Park, which includes three main islands; Rinca, Komodo, and Padar. The Park is deservedly on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List and home of the famous Komodo Dragons.

The three islands are of volcanic origin. It is here you’ll also find a world of endemic species. It’s a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise. The coast and coral reef which fringes the islands is magnificent too.

NUSA LEMBONGAN & NUSA PENIDA

Little archipelago located in southern Bali, a place much more wild and peaceful, perfect for diving and white sand beaches lover. But don’t relax too much, because Balinese consider those islands haunted by demons…

KALIMANTAN

For wild nature and spectacular safaris, there’s no better place than Kalimantan. The home to lush jungles and mangroves, traditional tribal villages and, of course, orangutan sanctuaries. Go on a river safari and see proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and pygmy elephants, stay overnight in a traditional longhouse and even swim with whale sharks off the east coast’s Derawan Islands.

SUMBA

A hidden paradise, here you will find miles of pristine beaches rub shoulders with dense tropical forests, dotted with traditional villages and mysterious rites. It’s also a nice spot for surfing…

JAVA

Indonesia’s most populous island, Java is full of wonders: the charming capital Jakarta, the ancient palace of the sultans and some UNESCO World Heritage temples such as Borobudur and Prambanan. Java is home to 45 active and impressive volcanoes !
