Embark on a cultural journey, leaving the hotel this morning with a local guide for a drive to Banyumulek Village. Although located near the busy capital of Mataram, Banyumulek retains its quiet charm and is the perfect place for an introduction to Sasak culture. Take a short walk around to see the daily activities of the people and visit the local pottery factories. Watch as the skilled craftsmen make unique kettles, carefully designed to be filled from the bottom rather than the top.

Continue to Ende, another Sasak village known for its traditional rice barn style houses. Admire these lumbungs, as they are called in local language, while strolling around the village. See scenes of daily life, listening as the guide explains about the customary family structures and routines of the Sasak people.

At midday head to the town of Praya for lunch followed by a drive to Sukarara. This Sasak village is famous throughout Indonesia for its weaving. Visit a village cooperative to see families at work making beautiful traditional textiles. Instead of using machines, the residents of Sukarara use ancient techniques handed down from generation to generation to make high quality sarongs and ikat fabrics. Before leaving the village, take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee and a local snack.

This afternoon return to the capital city of Mataram and visit Mayura water palace. This beautiful palace and lake served as the courts of justice during the era of Balinese rule. Stroll around the grounds, stopping to admire the unique designs and small statues that surround the palace. The guide will explain about the combination of Hindu and Islamic architectural features and how it reflects on traditional Sasak culture.

Following this insightful cultural excursion of Lombok, return to the hotel and bid farewell to the guide. (L)
