Asir: Saudi Arabia’s surprising mountain paradise

Asir: Saudi Arabia’s surprising mountain paradise

A highland escape off Saudi Arabia's beaten track

Located in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia, the Asir region is a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich culture and historical significance.

Bordered by the Red Sea to the west and nestled among the Sarawat Mountains, Asir is known for its unique landscapes, from verdant valleys and towering peaks to ancient villages and bustling markets.

Zayar Min, EXO Saudi Arabia Product Manager, explains, ‘I was genuinely surprised by the Asir Region during my inspection—it far exceeded my expectations. The landscape is greener, the cultural heritage richer, the climate cooler, and the beauty more striking than I anticipated. Among the unforgettable memories, my favourites include the homestay in a traditional stone house, the dramatic scenery while hiking Jabal Sawda and the friendly people I met along the way’.

This region offers a refreshing contrast to the desert plains typically associated with Saudi Arabia. And with a diverse array of experiences available, it is an enticing destination for those seeking to get off-the-beaten path.

Weather

Due to its elevation, Asir enjoys a moderate climate compared to the rest of Saudi Arabia.

The region experiences pleasant, cool weather throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).

The summer months (June to August) are mild, making it an excellent escape from the high heat elsewhere in the country. Winters (December to February) are cooler, with occasional rainfall, especially in the high-altitude areas.

The best time to visit Asir is from late spring to early autumn when the weather is at its most comfortable and the natural scenery is at its peak.
