Inside EXO: The Detail Behind Tailor-made Travel

A behind-the-scenes look at how our teams continually review suppliers and experiences to provide partners with the most up-to-date knowledge from our destinations.

Delivering exceptional travel experiences for EXO begins with our local knowledge and on-the-ground presence.

Throughout the year, our teams carry out frequent inspections to personally vet hotels, experiences, routes and services, ensuring they continue to meet and exceed the standards of our partners and their clients. By stepping directly into the traveller’s shoes, we can look beyond what an itinerary promises on paper to understand how each element comes together in practice.

This first-hand perspective allows us to refine the finer details, keep our recommendations current and ensure every journey continues to feel relevant, considered and exceptional. Below, we take a behind-the-scenes at some of our recent inspections in Thailand to look at how this process works in practice.

What does an experience actually feel like?

What’s included on paper is only ever half the story. The atmosphere, the guiding, the service, the human interaction, these are what actually determine whether an experience lands for travellers.

During a recent inspection in Bo Kluea, our team visited a small salt spa built around the area’s centuries-old rock salt tradition. The experience begins at an 800-year-old salt well, where the 80-year-old grandfather introduces guests to the traditional salt-making process, sharing a practice that has long been part of local life. His presence gives the experience a sense of continuity and authenticity, turning what could simply be a demonstration into a more personal encounter with the traditions of the area.

It is only by experiencing these moments themselves that our team can fully understand how the visit comes together and what will ultimately make it the most meaningful for travellers.

Who is it really right for?

Beyond deciding whether to recommend a product, understanding who will appreciate it most is just as important. During an inspection at a small ecolodge nestled in the valley of Bo Kluea Nan, guests stay in safari-style tents immersed in the surrounding natural landscape. Selecting the right tent, however, can make all the difference to the stay. Guests comfortable with more stairs may prefer the higher tents for their sweeping views and added privacy, while families travelling together may be better suited to tents connected by the same entrance.

Similarly, when our team reassessed a Hmong village experience near Chiang Mai, they recognised that while the village remains authentic to local life, travellers may benefit from more context around how the community has evolved, how locals dress today and the best times to visit to experience everyday village life. The aim is not simply to know which products are good, but to understand how best to present them and which travellers they are most likely to resonate with.

What wouldn’t we know without being there?

Sometimes it is the smallest details that reveal the most. Clear signage inside a vehicle, how much food is served or the way animals are cared for can all shape a traveller’s experience.

On recent inspections, for example, our teams noticed single-use plastic water bottles still being provided in hotel rooms and during tours. It may seem like a small operational detail, but seeing it first-hand created the opportunity to raise the issue directly with suppliers and discuss more considered alternatives that could reduce waste without compromising the guest experience.

This is where being on the ground becomes especially valuable. Inspections allow our teams to look beyond whether something simply works and consider how it could work better, from the smallest practical adjustments to broader questions around service, comfort and responsible travel.

Seamlessness and consistency assured

These examples represent just a small part of the inspections taking place across EXO throughout the year. By continually returning to the field, listening to our partners and drawing on the everyday expertise of our local teams, we can keep reassessing what we recommend as our destinations evolve. It is this ongoing process that gives our partners greater confidence in the journeys we create.
