So, you are planning to go to Cambodia, but what currency is accepted there? The national one is the Riel and exchanges for about 4000 to 1 $U.S. Speaking of U.S. Dollars, the currency is also widely accepted in Cambodia. Why? Well convenience. Imagine carrying around Riels, especially with the exchange rate we mentioned before. It is also highly advised to use small notes (1,5,10 and 20’s will do) and make sure there are no tears, even if it is very small. Dollar coins will not work in Cambodia, however.
If you happen to be in Thailand and are planning to come to Cambodia, then you are also in luck. Near the Thai border, and especially in towns like Battambang, Koh Kong, and Poipet, Thai Baht is also accepted.
So, if you have some Dollars and Baht in hand and are heading to Cambodia, you might as well hang on to those. Having some Riel would be nice, especially if you want to purchase inexpensive food or goods.
