Destination overview
Key areas:
- Sarawak: Sarawak is a state in Borneo that is known for its cultural diversity, lush rainforests, and fascinating wildlife. The state capital, Kuching, is a charming city that boasts of an intriguing mix of Malay, Chinese, and indigenous cultures. On the other hand, Batang Ai & Mulu National Parks are nature lover’s paradise that offers stunning rainforest scenery and the opportunity to spot wildlife such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills.
- Sabah: The state capital, Kota Kinabalu, is a modern city that offers visitors a range of attractions, including beautiful beaches, vibrant markets and Asia’s highest peak, Mt Kinabalu. Sandakan, on the northeastern tip, is a historic town that was once a hub for the timber and fishing industries and now famous for its conservation organisations including Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and Borneo SunBear Conservation Centre. Also in Sabah, Kinabatangan is renowned as one of the world’s richest ecosystems, boasting a fascinating river safari, lush rainforests, limestone caves, and an abundant array of species including orangutans and rare birds.
Hotels & Lodges:
Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Gaya Island offers a range of hotels and resorts, from 3-star to 5-star. In more remote areas, accommodation is limited and we advise booking as early as possible to secure rooms, especially in peak season.
When to visit:
Borneo has consistent year round temperatures, with day time highs falling between 26-32C. Marked by a tropical climate, the island is dry from May to September – during this period booking far in advance is highly suggested to lock in preferred services and hotels. During the rainy season, generally late November to end of February, some jungle lodges fully close down but cities and beaches are still accessible . The shoulder seasons of October to mid-November and March to April offer lush landscapes and fewer crowds.
