Dragons are not Fantasy Creatures, they are very Real! Living Proof: the Komodo Dragon

Dragons are not just rooted to fantasy. There are some in the real world.

Dragons are not just rooted to fantasy. There are some in the real world. Where re they, you might ask? There are some in Indonesia. No, these are fire breathing lizards or anything like that. These guys are the Komodo Dragons, and they can only be seen in their natural habitat in the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. Are you ready to confront the dragon?

These are some big animals, that’s for sure! The Komodo Dragon can grow to a length of 3 meters and weigh more than 90 kilograms. But don’t be fooled by their size. They are pretty quick and agile, despite the mass they are carrying. And you have to be, right? If you are an apex predator. Yes, because of their massive size, they practically dominate the ecosystem they live in. Not surprising at all.

The Komodo Dragon’s diet include carcasses of dead animals. But don’t forget, they are also hunters, so a wide range of live animals constitute the dragon’s diet, including birds, and mammals. They have been known to take down small deer and water buffaloes. Some have even seen these lizards devour a large pig completely in less than 20 minutes! Komodo Dragons can consume huge chunks of their food whole and in certain cases, even swallow entire animals. They can even resort to cannibalism! They will just about eat anything!

The Komodo Dragon’s teeth are frequently covered by gingival tissue, resulting in its saliva being frequently tinged in blood. Because of this, its mouth is full of bacteria. Even if its prey survives a Komodo Dragon attack, the infection from the bite will usually kill it later. Additional research has suggested that these animals may have a venom gland on its lower jaw that can paralyze its prey.

It is wise to exercise caution when checking out the Komodo Dragon in their natural habitat. They have been known to attack humans! Stick with the group and stay close to the park ranger. These lizards are relentless, especially when it comes to food, so stay at that elevated building or platform and clear from the railings during their feeding time.
