Your revelation of mysterious Myanmar starts at one of the country’s most ecologically important sites, Inle Lake. One of the strangest sights you will see roams around these lakes. Yes, believe your eyes, these guys are rowing their boats with their legs! Another strange encounter involves cats and monks. What’s the connection? Well, monks train regular house cats to jump through hoops. What started out as an exercise and entertainment routine for the cats has now become a tourist attraction in its own right. Besides that, the monastery does house Shan Buddha statues and many admire the beautiful architecture and picturesque setting in which the monastery was built.

Make various interesting stops on your way to Loikaw. First, hop on a boat to Hpe Kom and visit Thar Khuang village which has an ancient monastery, excellent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside area and of course friendly people. The boat trip itself is scenic. Surrounding you and the vessel are mountains, valleys and the tranquil waters of the lake. You will also pay Phe Kom a visit before finally heading to Loikaw by car.

Enjoy an atmospheric breakfast in a local tea house. One thing to note: the Burmese love their tea! If you happen to be here on a Wednesday or Saturday, you can see a sea of colors converge at the Demwaso Market. The sea of colors are the hilltribes. These traditional guys wear some really colorful and unique garments, to say the least. After seeing the ethic people trade their goods at the market, learn more about them at the Kayah Museum. Then head out to a weaving shop and end the day as you bask in the sunset at Taunggwe Pagoda.

Start the next day with a casual stroll around town before hopping in a car for the trip to Kalaw. The trip is quite scenic to say the least, with lush fields and mountain ranges highlighting the journey.
