Hutong Walks Series (Half Day)

Anyone looking to get more of a handle on China’s amazing history will find plenty of grist down the narrow alleyways that characterise old Beijing. These charismatic streets – known as hutongs – are a world removed from the shiny chrome and glass edifices that symbolise the contemporary capital. Here, political movements were fostered as well as advances in literature, costume and poetry. The streets have also traditionally been home to fascinating strands of Beijing society, with a host of colourful characters leaving their imprint. These immersive walking tours examine these themes, taking guests through the Dongcheng hutongs. In the company of an expert guide, guests can choose from three options, each one exploring different themes relating to hutong life. Whether it is a breezy look at forgotten or mythical characters or a more serious examination of the political intrigue that has sprung from the streets, these walks offer a precious insight to a Beijing that is often hidden from outsiders.
