Hidden Corners of Yogyakarta (Half Day)

Hidden Corners of Yogyakarta (Half Day)

One of Indonesia’s most visited cities, Yogyakarta is familiar to many visitors. Nevertheless, only a fraction of these stray far from the main tourist sights and areas. This half-day adventure lifts the lid on a lesser-known side to Java’s cultural capital – offering an insight to cultural totems like traditional herbal medicine, batik and local forms of transportation. One of the first stops on the journey is Vihara Buddha Prabha, an important place of worship for Buddha, Confucius and followers of Taoism in the majority Muslim city. From here it is a fascinating walk through narrow alleys and local communities to the Code River, from which expansive views of the city can be savoured. Other vivid highlights that can be sampled on the journey include witnessing the making of jamu (herbal medicine) and sampling local delicacies such as es rujak, a sweet, sour fruit salad topped with ice cream and coconut milk.
