Begin with a transfer to Yakusugi Land, a vast forest reserve situated 1,000 metres above sea level. Although less physically demanding than other trails on the island, the scenery is just as impressive. The island’s enormous old trees, often covered in green moss, offer an unusual and unique view. Enter the park to observe a collection of millennial cedars, including the famous Buddha Sugi and Odaiko Sugi. Cross stable suspension bridges over clear mountain streams while enjoying the lush greenery of the ravine.

For more adventurous hikers, continue beyond the main park trails onto the more rugged path leading to the Yamato Sugi. This intermediate course involves navigating natural forest floors and steeper terrain to reach the towering 2,000-year-old tree.

Alternatively, for those seeking a milder experience, the excursion can be limited to the Yakusugi Land Walk. This beginner-friendly course utilises well-maintained boardwalks and stone paths. Conclude the forest exploration and return to the hotel by vehicle. (L)
