Veer off the beaten track on an adventure through Bali’s west coast. Cheer alongside locals at the famous Negara buffalo races and explore an authentic fishing village. Then meet with inspiring volunteers at a turtle conservation centre and trek through scenic highland plantations, seeing a truly local side of Bali.

Itinerary

📍 South Bali Hotel – Taman Ayun Temple (15 km): 30 minutes Taman Ayun – Tanah Lot (18 km): 30 minutes Tanah Lot – Pekutatan (56 km): 1 hour 50 minutes

In the morning, meet with the guide and driver at the hotel in South Bali and receive a private transfer to the island’s west coast.

On the way there, a stop will be made at the Royal Temple of Mengwi, which was built in 1634 to serve as the family temple of the Mengwi Dynasty. The temple is a truly stunning piece of historical architecture, surrounded by a moat with multi–roofed meru shrines and intricately carved wooden gates.

Continue to further west where there is ceramic village Pejaten where rice husks light up the kilns. It has been a centre of pottery for generations and produces vast types of pottery including jars, panels, and trays and so called Coblong; small bowls used both in the kitchen as well as for ceremonial purposes. Visit the local ceramic museum showcasing various kinds of pottery and ceramics which have been made in the village and other part of Indonesia.

The drive then continues to Tanah Lot Temple, Bali’s most famous sea temple which is set dramatically on a small island about 100 metres off the coast and is only accessible during low tide.

Continue to Puri Dajuma Hotel for check in and late lunch.

The remainder of the day is free at leisure.

📍 Pekutatan – Negara (27 km): 50 minutes Negara – Perancak (10 km): 20 minutes Perancak – Pekutatan (18 km): 35 minutes

Early in the morning, be picked up by the guide and driver and taken to Negara to see the famous Buffalo Race – a colourful event that is unique to this area of Bali. The regular Sunday race starts at 07:30 and finishes at around 13:00.

Note: Buffalo races occur every Sunday but the big important races happen mostly in July and August

On the way back to the hotel a stop will be made in Perancak to visit a turtle sanctuary, meet with local volunteers and learn about the operations here. Next, walk to the nearby port and see an array of colourful phinisi fishing vessels, all built traditionally using ancient Bugis techniques which are only seen in Bugis Village.

Afterwards, return to the hotel for a late lunch and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight in Puri Dajuma.

📍 Pekutatan – Pulukan Agrowisata (7 km): 20 min Pulukan Agrowisata – Munduk (45 km): 1h30 min

In the morning, after breakfast and check-out, be picked up and driven through the hills to a rubber factory, which offers insight into local rubber processing techniques.

From there, a two-hour soft trek allows guests to walk through rubber plantation and witness the harvesting process. Clove and vanilla trees also can be found here. After the trek, a picnic lunch is served.

The drive then continues over scenic roads, passing plantations and rice terraces, before arriving in Munduk in the late afternoon.
