Myanmar sure has to be a wonderful and eye-opening experience for just about anybody visiting the country. It’s pretty exotic as a result of it not being visited frequently by visitors. So, what you see is very Burmese. Plus the country’s got an impressive array of beautiful temples, pagodas and scenic landscapes. And great smiling people, of course. Some of these men may look like they are wearing skirts. Just to let you know that they are not skirts but instead are the durable and multi-purpose longyi.

So, what is the longyi? It is practically a sheet of cloth, worn by both men and women. With men wearing the garment, it may resemble a skirt (much like a kilt in Scotland), but as we all know, men do not wear skirts! The cloth is tied around the waist and runs all the way down to the ankles but some people fold it up to the knees for extra comfort.

A typical Burmese will have a nice collection of longyis in their closet. In fact, they will also own an elaborate silk garment and keep it stored for special occasions, like marriages, special festivals and holidays. The garment is so important to the Burmese people that even the poor will find a way to save up and own at least one elaborate longyi.

This unique piece of Burmese garment is certainly a suitable cloth for the type of weather in Myanmar. It allows air to circulate to and keeps the wearer cool in the tropical heat. If it really is feeling hot, then the wearer can just roll it up, acting like a temporary pair of shorts.

In case you were wondering, there are more uses for this cloth than just ‘pants’. Men may place a folded longyi on their shoulder and use it as a cushion for carrying heavy loads. It can also be placed on the head and used as a cushion for women carrying pots on their head. It can also be a head cloth for keeping the head under the sun or even as a scarf. Pretty neat and multi-functional, huh?
