Compared to the hectic pace and often huge metropolises of Southeast Asia’s capitals, Vientiane seems like a small little countryside town. But, don’t mistake it for a place with nothing to see and do. The capital has her fair share of temples and restaurants as well as religious and cultural experiences that can rival any city. Experience the capital like no other with our Unseen Vientiane tour.
Kick things off by visiting Lao arts and crafts expert Sandra Yuck. She will demonstrate some of country’s methods in making Lao products. Not only is this a great introduction to the country’s art, but the proceeds of this session will go towards a helping educate children about the dangers of drugs and also towards rehabilitating drug addicts.
Vientiane is also scenic and quite lively during the night, especially at one of those aromatic night markets . Enjoy dinner at a nearby restaurant as traditional song and dance entertainment bring life to your meal. After that, enjoy hanging out in one of the capital’s lounge bars with the delightful and renowned Lao Beer or to one of the capital’s lively night clubs.
It is now time to discover the spiritual side of Vientiane. And your guide; an English speaking monk. Not only will he shed light on anything Buddhism and how it relates to Laos, but also into the country’s culture and tradition. Ask him anything and he will answer it.
Continue your quest for spiritual enlightenment at one of the city’s last remaining forest temples. Go for a traditional sauna session. Then try your hand at meditation and indulge yourself in a traditional Lao massage that will soothe mind, body and soul.
Next, experience one of Laos’ oldest traditions, the Baci which has been practiced even before the introduction of Buddhism in the country. The purpose of the Baci is to call the spirits to bless people during important events and your visit.
Spend the last day making merit. Start off early (early meaning before sunrise) and give alms to the monks, who will in turn offer you a blessing. These gays cannot buy or store food, so you’ve done a really good deed. Then, travel to another forest temple and give back to nature as you learn their recycling techniques. While you are at it, contribute to the temple’s beautiful garden by planting your own plant there.
