After kicking off in the intriguing city of Medan, the route heads inland to Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the few remaining sanctuaries for the Sumatran orang-utan. Heading deeper into the jungle, the challenging hike involves some steep inclines and tricky terrain. The effort is worth it, however, for the first-hand experience of some of Indonesia’s finest rainforest scenery, encounters with wildlife and activities such as river rafting and the chance to do some traditional fishing.
